SSH& start with the Buurbuddy project: new residents receive a warm welcome!

Reading time: 2 minutes

At SSH&, living is not just about having a room, but also about social support and involvement. That’s why we are introducing Buurbuddy: an initiative where existing residents help new tenants get acquainted with the building and the neighborhood.

Why this project?
Some residents who are directly placed through SSH&, such as student asylum seekers or residents with care and support needs, sometimes require extra guidance when settling into a new building or neighborhood. With Buurbuddy, we offer a low-threshold, personal point of contact so that new residents feel at home more quickly and have a safe person to turn to.

What does a Buurbuddy do?
A Buurbuddy is a volunteer resident who helps new residents with practical questions, social interactions, and daily life in the building. This can include having a cup of coffee together, grocery shopping, or simply checking in to see how they are doing. Contact can be occasional or weekly, depending on the needs of the new resident. The program lasts a minimum of three months, with the option to extend up to twelve months.

Who can become a Buurbuddy?
Volunteers are tenants of SSH& themselves and are committed to helping new residents feel welcome. We ask that they take on the buddy role without judgment and take initiative in building the contact independently.

Buurbuddy not only strengthens social bonds but also makes SSH& a place where residents feel seen, heard, and welcome.
